WCS-10 marine certified intelligent CAN switch & bridge

TKE WCS-10 is a marine-certified intelligent CAN switch and bridge designed for segmented CAN network architectures in maritime and offshore applications. Adapted specifically for marine environments with gold-plated connectors and DNV certification, the WCS-10 enables reliable communication between multiple CAN bus segments while improving network stability and fault isolation.

With thousands of units delivered to the marine industry, the WCS-10 is used in vessels worldwide to ensure safe and robust CAN network segmentation in demanding marine environments.

Certified by DNV GL (formerly Germanischer Lloyd) for use in GL-classed vessels. It enables safe and reliable segmentation of CAN networks in ship automation systems. The WCS-10 is certified for environmental category D, EMC 1 as well as software class 3. The certificate number is TAA00002DV

  • Marine Certified for GL/DNV Vessels
DNV-certified CAN switch bridge designed specifically for marine environments, compliant with Environmental Category D, EMC 1, and Software Class 3 requirements.
  • Intelligent Segmented CAN Networking
Supports star and tree topology CAN architectures with configurable message routing and filtering, reducing CAN bus load and improving network reliability.
  • Galvanically Isolated Multi-Channel CAN Bridge
Four isolated CAN routing ports protect network segments from electrical faults, short circuits, and EMI disturbances while maintaining reliable communication between systems.

Key features

  • 4 × Switched CAN Ports
Supports segmented CAN bus networks with independent routing between multiple CAN segments.
  • Dedicated CANopen Configuration Port
Separate CAN port for diagnostics, monitoring, firmware updates, and CANopen-based configuration.
  • Marine-Optimized Design
Gold-plated connectors and rugged construction designed for maritime environments and long-term reliability.
  • Flexible CAN Bitrates
Supports independent CAN bitrates per segment (125, 250, 500, 800, and 1000 kbps).
  • Configurable Message Filtering
Messages can be selectively routed between CAN segments to reduce unnecessary traffic and improve network performance.
  • Galvanic Isolation
Electrical isolation between CAN branches prevents disturbances from propagating through the network.
  • DIN-Rail Mountable Housing
Compact industrial enclosure for marine control cabinets and automation systems.

How the WCS-10 CAN switch works

The WCS-10 operates as an intelligent CAN bridge that reads CAN messages from one network segment, optionally filters the messages, and retransmits them to selected CAN segments. Unlike traditional CAN repeaters, the WCS-10 only forwards required traffic, significantly reducing CAN bus load and improving network efficiency.

Each CAN segment is electrically isolated and can operate independently with different CAN bitrates, enabling optimized network structures for long cable distances, remote nodes, and complex marine automation systems.

The dedicated CANopen configuration port allows active diagnostics, remote monitoring, and firmware updates without interrupting normal CAN network operation.

Typical applications

  • Marine automation systems
  • Ship communication networks
  • Offshore systems
  • Vessel propulsion and control systems
  • Segmented CAN architectures in ships
  • Marine energy and monitoring systems

Configuration over CAN

The configuration port can also be connected to the switched network. WCS-10 CAN switch allows configuration and monitoring from the CAN connected HMI or bus master node. This flexibility also makes it possible to place the configuration port in a more accessible or safer location, even if the switch itself is installed in a hard-to-reach or hazardous environment.

CAN bitrates and other settings can be configured via Configuration software, or any standard CANopen configuration tool. The WCS-10 CAN switch does not contain any DIP switches, eliminating mechanical wear and ensuring long-term reliability in industrial environments.
